How search engines index the site?

Justify FullSearch engine rankings are not formed purely by chance. Bing and Google have developed sophisticated algorithms to provide accurate and reliable service. The information fed back to them by "spiders" which are simple robots that crawl quickly on a website to search for the keyword relevance.

The combination of domains with the power and relevance of a page is therefore of critical importance, where it ends up in the rankings. However, there are many other things you need to do to grease the wheels of indexing, especially if you show a new site or wait weeks to have a policy change in Google.

The first way to improve your chances of being indexed by ensuring that the search engines where you are white. Webmaster Tools you can to a certain degree and is a great way to get the ball rolling - although certainly not guaranteed instant indexing.

You should also ensure that it is easy for the spider to find you. They are constantly crawling the Internet, so the more links you have pointing to your site, the more likely they are to follow one.

Inbound links, not only build your strength, but also help speed up the rankings. If this is the source of high traffic sites to be indexed by far more common every day, then your chances are to continue to grow.

There are, however, urge caution to all of them. You should make sure that if you put all the effort suggests that you do everything you can to help the spiders when they finally arrive at your site.

This means defining the meaning of each part, effectively ranking it will be crawled in the order you want. First on the list can be your site map. By controlling spider here, they can quickly find any page on the site and jump between them. Make sure you are not all the pages that you have a robots.txt file also indicated, which certainly can offer an explanation for the sluggish performance engine covers.

You should also ensure that even with clear links to the code is clean and the pages load faster. If the search engine spiders stable, they do not hang around to index the rest of your site. They are working not for a finite time frame and what they managed to fit in, not indexed. To keep the code and the site is relatively clean, very important.

Also make sure there are no dead ends. If you delete a page, remove all links to, or forward them to a live site. When spiders crawl into a disagreement, the matter should be reported to the search engines and also more likely to leave the spot. Provides you with a variety of potential problems.

So if you are indexed regularly and want to get top rankings, you need to play through the search engines. "It's not overly complicated, but if you do it right make sure you benefit from it.

Guaranteed Search Engine Optimization

The term “Guaranteed search engine optimization” has become a taboo in the online SEO world. As we all know, it is not possible for anyone to guarantee top # 1 SEO results on Google, Yahoo or any other search engines.

In order to make your website accessible to search engines users who have to ensure that your website is ranking near the top results for your targeted keywords.

Everybody knows the importance of top page SEO rankings and how it can help to generate more sales, queries and leads for your business. You must also ensure that keywords for which you are optimizing your website truly reflect your business services/products. There are several business owners who wish to hire only “guaranteed” SEO service companies.

Is it possible to hire guaranteed SEO?
If any SEO company offers you guaranteed #1 rankings on Google, Yahoo and Bing then you must never hire these SEO companies. Nobody can guarantee #1 rankings on Google. If you still believe that you can avail guaranteed SEO services then you must watch this video below by Matt Cutts from Google:-

Still, you might spot several SEO Companies offering guaranteed SEO rankings, but most of these companies might not be able to deliver guaranteed search engine placements/results.

How can I hire Guaranteed SEO ?
There are situations where you know that higher rankings can be achieved. Take for example, if your website is ranking on page 2 and you want your website to rank on top page 1, then you should ask following questions from SEO companies offering guaranteed SEO services:-

a) Can you offer a refund if you fail to deliver “Guaranteed” SEO services - In case your SEO Company does not bother to offer any refund then you must not go ahead with these SEO companies. You can sign a contract mentioning this clause. You can only guarantee SEO services if your SEO company agrees to refund your money in case “guaranteed results” are not achieved.

b) How soon can I expect to see “Guaranteed” SEO results - If any website is ranking at position #8 on top page 1 and client is planning to achieve top # 5 position then you must get an exact timeline from your SEO Firm.

c) Speak with their live/existing clients - If you are serious about guaranteed SEO then we would recommend you to speak directly (or email live/existing) with the clients of Search engine optimization services company you are planning to hire.

As per the latest trend in search engine optimization industry and changing algorithms of different search engines including Google, Yahoo and Bing, nobody can guarantee top # 1 Search engine rankings. However, following these basic guidelines you can make sure that “SEO services” you get from your SEO company is “Guaranteed”.

Online Marketing - Why You Need to Understand

Whether you’re an established offline business or are just starting up online, you need to have a clear understanding of your market. It’s not like building a store in the real world, where your competitors are usually defined by geographical location. On the Internet, there are no boundaries or borders. Customers can get their goods and services from anyone, anywhere and at any time.

Therefore if you are going to stumble in blindly to a saturated market without any sense of what you’re looking to achieve, failure is the only likely outcome. Let’s say I want to create a new poker site. As you’re probably well aware, there is a massive online gambling industry in the UK. Huge companies compete for lucrative rankings in Google – often propped up by offline campaigns, display advertising and affiliates.

So if I want to start to make a dent in the poker market I need to be reasonably savvy in a number of online marketing strategies. SEO alone probably won’t deliver the results that I need.

This is a mistake that a lot of companies make unfortunately. By putting all their eggs in one basket, they miss out on vital traffic sources. Remember particularly that SEO can take some time to take effect too, so if you want to start getting punters through your virtual doors immediately, alternative avenues are essential.

You will also need to establish the keywords you’re going to target. If it’s going to be straight up ‘online poker’ and other generic short tail terms, you can expect to enjoy a top 100 Google ranking, if you’re lucky. A new site simply can’t compete with an established one. You will have no authority, very few links and zero domain age, all of which means that ranking is next to impossible – initially at least.

You need a niche. More importantly though, you need to make sure you target it effectively. Moving away from the poker analogy, this is true of almost any new online business. You can’t hope to lock horns with companies who are well established and have a solid client base and site authority. What you need to do is create a groundswell of interest amongst your target audience. Forget getting everyone and anyone to visit your site, make sure you’re getting those who are most likely to convert first and foremost.

This means that you advertise where they’re looking. So whether that’s honing your long-tail keyword targeting, developing a strong PPC campaign, creating a social networking profile or PPC advertising, your resources need to be distributed sensibly and effectively. This will be made much easier if you take the time to access the market, customer-base and how best to advertise your business. Leaving your success to chance will probably do more to ensure that your ambitions are never fulfilled more than anything else.

5 Steps To A Great Web Landing Page

More often than not, businesses that pay to advertise or promote their products or services send everyone to the same place: the homepage of their company Web site. Unfortunately, when you send everyone to a homepage packed with multiple messages and calls to action, not to mention navigation that may distract from the purpose of your promotion, it's difficult to get your visitors to do exactly what you want them to do. Just as important, it's nearly impossible for you to effectively track ROAI, or return on advertising investment).

Successful marketers, especially ones accountable for ROAI, regularly use special landing pages to capture qualified leads and make sales. Web site landing pages are like the endcaps you see in a store -- the displays at the end of store aisles showcasing specific products and summoning customers to buy now. An effective landing page devoted to a single product or service offering, or one matching up with a message-specific referring advertisement, can significantly boost leads and conversion rates.

To create a top-notch landing page, follow these five simple steps:

Step 1: Anticipate customer expectations. Examine your ads to make sure your landing page is consistent with the messaging and expectations set in those ads.

Step 2: Focus on a clear, unambiguous call to action. Everything on a landing page should funnel the visitor's attention to a specific call to action. Make that action as easy as possible to execute.

Step 3: Incorporate SEO (search engine optimization). Carefully choose a page title and heading that include keywords people are likely to search to find your product or service. Use those same keywords -- no more than five to seven of them -- in the keyword meta tag for the page, and authentically incorporate those same words in the copy found on the landing page itself.

Step 4: Reduce clutter. Endcaps succeed by isolating one product from the static of the store aisle. Online, excessive information and choices such as unnecessary links, navigation options, or buttons --especially ones that lead elsewhere -- distract from your call to action.

Step 5: Convey safety and trust. A professional design and carefully edited text are a good start. Add logos or seals for acceptable payment methods, money-back guarantees, memberships in trade associations or the Better Business Bureau, and any media outlets that have reported positively on your company, products, or services.

One of the main advantages of creating a landing page devoted to one product or service is that you can monitor your site's traffic and conversions more easily and quickly gauge the ROAI of advertising campaigns. After launching your landing page, use Web analytics to identify and remove any obstacles to conversion. Minor tweaks can result in major gains.

At the end of the day, if your business is paying for traffic (either through display advertising in a magazine or pay-per-click or banner advertising online), you have every right to determine where on your Web site that traffic lands. Do your bottom line a favor: Create powerful yet succinct landing pages with strong calls to action that always relate to the driver that brings visitors to your page in the first place.

SEO Services

SEO or search engine optimisation is the process of maximising your position or rank on the organic or natural search engine listings. There are over 200 individual factors that effect your position on Google, the most popular search engine and SEO is about understanding those factors and ensuring your site works to meet those factors.

Many believe that SEO is complex but it shouldn't be. I always explain that Google is like a librarian albeit a very pragmatic one. If you ask the librarian for a book on the life of the Kangaroo for example, they will easily know how to find one. How?

Well, when a book first arrives at the library, the librarian will look at the title of the book, the chapters and the content and then decide where to put the book on the shelves. If it's a relatively good book, a new book or published by a particularly authoritative author on the subject it will be given a more prominent position. So, when you ask for a book on the life of the Kangaroos, the librarian sends you to the right section and you attempt to match your search.

Google works in exactly the same way. When you ask Google for content on the life of the Kangaroo, Google looks at its database and tries to match up a site for you by looking at the title of the site, the chapters, headings, content and publisher. If these elements match, Google serves you the site in its listings. So you now see what SEO is all about; its about matching up your site title, headings and content and telling Google honestly and clearly what your site is all about.

...to understand how SEO works in its Google Webmaster site at bit.ly/1ab7kt. Many SEO agencies like you to believe that SEO is a 'dark art' and that all they know is highly secret and technical. It isn't and SEO is something we can all do.

So, SEO falls into three distinct areas; research, on-page factors, and off-page factors. On-page elements are those factors you control within the code and content of your own site. Off-page factors include for example inbound links to your site, creating content for BLOGS, news sites, online PR and social media

The first step in SEO must be to evaluate your current position and where your potential traffic will come from; if you can't monitor it, you can't manage it. What are people actually searching for? Is Google even aware of your site? How many pages does it see? What does it see? Remember, Google is a piece of software so it sees your site very differently to a human visitor and this is what it uses to rank you site for those searches your potential customers are making.

The very first element in evaluating our site is to investigate what terms or key phrases your potential customers are actually entering into Google to find your products and services. Don't guess as these key phrases will probably be very different to the key phrases you would use. Google has a great tool for finding this information at bit.ly/8r2NJ. This shows you how many searches there were for each key phrase, how much competition there is for that key phrase and even other similar, related key phrases you may not have though about. Once you understand what your potential audience is looking for, SEO is then all about matching your site and it's content to those key phrases.

Next you need to look at how Google views your site. There is a simple way to achieve this. Simply enter 'site:www.yourdomain.com' into Google and you see a list of the pages Google knows about. If there are pages in your site that don't appear here, there may be a problem or a barrier to Google on your site.

Clicking on 'Cached' then reveals further information such as the date that Google visited your page. If Google hasn't visited this page for more than a month, your page may have fallen out of favour, usually as the content hasn't changed. If this is your homepage, you have a major problem.

Further clicking on 'Text-only version' then shows you what Google actually sees. This may be very different to what you expect, but be aware, this is what you are being judged on by Google. If the page is blank or shows little content, you have a problem.

Manage
Once you are aware of the current state of your site, you are in a position to start making improvements.

The first element to consider is that Google looks at the technical framework for your site. You really need the help of your technical people however; you need to know the right questions to ask them. This is where your research comes in. Is my site written in XHTML? Is my layout table based or CSS based? What have you put in our META description tag? What are you using for our TITLE tags and H1 tags. These won't mean much to most but they should certainly mean a lot to your Web developer. Google looks for clear, current, compliant ...code and this does influence your ranking.

Some of the problems you may identify from your evaluation above need a technical fix however, if there was one on-site exercise you could undertake to make an immediate difference it would be to update your content on a regular basis. Nothing pleases Google more than to see regular additions to the content of your site.

If you want Google to treat your site as authoritative and relevant; ranking your pages over others, you need to create fresh, relevant content, relating to the key phrases you identified above on a regular basis. Maintaining your own Website needn't be expensive either, there are plenty of options for a content management system or CMS starting from as little as $20/month.

So, in summary, know your online market place, get your site in great shape technically, and keep the content up to date. Simple!

When you consider off-page SEO, it's often exclusively about link building. However, this is missing so much of what off-page SEO is all about. Link building should be a natural process, not a forced one and quality is so much more important than quantity. Google looks at inbound links, that is links to your site as a sign of recommendation; a vote. However, Google also looks at the value of that vote. How? Google ranks each site and gives it a score out of ten, called PageRank™ and the best way to see this is to install the Google Toolbar at bit.ly/3jdg9o. This gives you an awful lot of information for SEO work and is well worth using.

So, you need to build good inbound links and the best way to do this is manually, don't use 'link farming' services. Contact the owner of the Web site you.

...want to link with. Try trade associations, authoritative sites and sites with a PageRank™ of 4+. These are authoritative, trusted and established in Google's view.

Also, remember all that great content on your site? Get it out there on forums, social media sites and news/bookmarking sites like Digg (digg.com). Try to look for FAQs and answer users questions with good, relevant information. Don't just sell though, be more subtle and you'll be far more welcome. The value of the links back to your site from these actions will be immense but it's not just the link, real people follow these links to your site and that's what you want, real people.

Recent Developments
So, what's new in SEO? The main shift in search recently is the concept of real-time search; search based on what is being said right now, predominantly on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Using a service such as Twitter Search at search.twitter.com shows you what is being talked about right now. Twitter shows a list of the most popular key phrases that are being talked about right now and this is a great way to find out what is happening often before news breaks on TV. The recent death of Michael Jackson appeared on Twitter before any of the TV news channels picked up the story.

How can you use this? Well if you know what people are talking about, make sure you update your site with related content. Listen with Twitter, don't just speak on Twitter. Become an authority on all that is new and talk about it first.

Website redesigns must take SEO into account

Although companies usually remake their corporate websites for reasons other than search engine optimization (SEO), the importance of integrating SEO into the new site when doing so cannot be overestimated.

Experts advise companies to start by doing keyword research on the most popular searches in their field, using both free tools like Google AdWords and internal information on which of the company's search ads have been successful.

However, there are still a few search engine optimization (SEO) pitfalls that await unwary companies, according to SEO expert Mark Jackson, writing at Search Engine Watch. Content that will remain common to both the old and new websites can trigger duplicate detection in search engines, causing their page rankings to plummet. Failing to update URLs from the old site with a redirect can lead to consumers receiving outdated and possibly incorrect content.

If done correctly, with proper attention paid to search engine optimization (SEO), website redesigns can produce great benefits for businesses. With so much information available on the internet about SEO firms and techniques, no company should pass up the opportunity to grow their online presence.

Bing continues to grow, making it more important for SEO

It appears that Microsoft continues to make a case for companies to factor Bing into their search engine optimization (SEO) strategy after the company saw its search engine market share in the U.S. increase in August.

According to comScore, Microsoft sites saw their share of searches increase 0.4 percentage points to 9.3 percent in August. Meanwhile, Google saw its share of the market dip slightly with a 0.1 point drop to 64.6 percent.

Overall, all the major search engines saw their searches increase last month, but Microsoft saw the largest gain with a 7 percent increase of 1.29 billion searches. This still leaves the search engine far behind Google's monthly search total of just under 9 billion.

Although comScore's numbers still have Microsoft in third place with less than 10 percent of the search engine market, these figures show that a Microhoo deal will likely make it important for companies to use search engine marketing for the new Bing/Yahoo partnership.

Together, Yahoo and Microsoft sites conducted more than 4.1 billion searches in August - giving them approximately 19 percent of the market.

Outsource SEO Services to India

India is fast-becoming the best place to outsource search engine optimization (SEO) services.

The country has a rich supply of new SEO companies and seo freelance seo experts — raising a competitive environment that guarantees a affordable price. Plus, modern studies indicate that the technical aptitude of SEO companies in India is very high, making them a cost-efficient investment.

India has always been titled a good place to outsource. The employees are quick learners and welcome to new directions. Results indicate that SEO services outsourced from this country can generate positive results.

However, SEO work takes a lot of manpower and manpower hours. Sites need to be sure that all the necessary SEO elements, specified link building, content creation, and constant updates. And this requires different departments and specializations.

E.g., content creation shouldn't be assigned to SEO specialists. While good content—in itself—cannot generate traffic, it's still a vital part of SEO. Content will back-up the formality of your site. And if you combine good content with a good SEO campaign—you've a good online business model.

How Much Can an SEO Company Really Help You?

There is an excellent topic at a WebmasterWorld thread (required paid access). The topic is named, "Am I asking for too much from SEO companies?"

In short, the thread has one person who has several sites and has, over the years, had to hand over the SEO work to SEO companies. He has been through "all the 'SEO' firms in town" and is really never happy with the outcome. He asks, is he asking too much from these SEO companies? Is he expecting too much? Can an SEO company help him at this point?

We have discussed in the past the pros and cons of bring SEO in house. Clearly, an SEO who focuses for a long time in a specific industry may have some advantages. But at what point are your sites too big for an external SEO company?

The thread doesn't really go off on the size issue. The discussion there is more about what to expect from SEO companies and how to utilize them for a network of site in your situation. Some recommend that for his situation, he should just ask a few trusted SEO companies for SEO audits and then compare those audits. Maybe hiring an SEO on a month to month basis, doesn't pay for him - or maybe it does.

Like I said, lots of good questions and discussion around the top of the value of an SEO company in the thread.

SEO makes website marketing easier

Online marketing is one of the most novel ways that have transformed the orientation of business of late. Gone are the days when people used to communicate through tedious methods for acquiring the cherished product. The same can be done, in our time, through easier methods of Internet and through just one click we can have the glimpses of our desirable products. Moreover they can also be bought or booked through the fitting ways also available on the same website.

However, if you are the owner of the website, this is not going to ensure the occasional visits of visitors to your website. You shall have to get the Internet marketing right at the very outset for this. On the other hand you shall have to start the concept of online marketing yourself. Which can be the best among the various methods dominating now? There are indeed many like banner ads, email marketing, affiliate advertising and others. But the most proficient of them is the Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

There is no doubt in it that you want to get the excessive number of visitors in the online world. But this is not a simple task at all and you shall have to exploit the best strategy to reach them before others. Here lies the authenticity and also the effectivity of SEO or Search Engine Optimization. If you make a simple research, you will find that this is the most plausible way for making a prolific online business. What is SEO then? It is nothing but the fruitful application of an algorithm intended to develop a website’s search engine rankings. Who conducts its operations? A vendor in the sphere of the web world does this. His chief intention is to develop both the quantity and quality of the visitors to the very website.

Whys is there the need of improved quality? The most significant reason is that there is always the need to direct the right traffic, people who are in the Internet searching for products or services that are also offered by you. This, in contrast to any stochastic selection of people, is much better. This is not any fantasy but also a proven fact. Never forget that the SEO strategy developed for your website works with your target market in consideration. It works unstintingly to make people look at or visit your website. Here you shall have to use the relevance since each and very attraction adheres to a specific time.

You cannot simply move without the SEO. The reason is very obvious. On one hand it deals with those significant areas that marketers should address at the time of selling and advertising online. It is the platform, conversely, that creates attentiveness, helps the websites to get hold of both the emerging and prospective clientele. It, apart from this, plays a noteworthy role in converting the visitors to loyal customers along with optimizing the market efforts to target the buyers.

The role of SEO in marketing the website online is imperative and is getting more prominence step by step.

SEO Competitive Intelligence: Learn From Your Rivals

Understanding what your competitors are doing online is a must and absolute priority when launching a new website that is entering a competitive space and also when established websites want to keep an eye on their competition. By knowing what your rivals are doing in their SEO and social media space, not only will you have a better knowledge of their online marketing strategy, but you can also emulate what is working for them, and generate internal ideas to stay proactive.

Furthermore, by understanding what your competition is doing in terms of on-site SEO, link building, social media marketing, developing third party properties and other search marketing tactics; you can also identify potential new threats which are making it up the rankings and also unearth tactics which are working from them (or not working for them), that you can improve upon, and thrive from in your overall marketing strategy.

Identifying the Competition

The first step in identifying your online competition is checking out the search results for your most popular keywords. Do not look only at keywords which drive the most traffic, but also your longtail keyterms and also the keyterms which convert the most sales, leads or phone calls.

By comparing the sites which you compete with in these various groups of keyterms, you will more or less identify different styles of competition that you can learn from and monitor. Here are some types of sites which may not appear for your basic keyterms in the serps, that you need to monitor.

* Affiliate sites are your competition. Not only sites which run the affiliate ads of your rivals, but also your own affiliate ads, because if they are ranking above your company’s site, they are taking money out of your pocket (or the search division’s pocket) by driving traffic and sales that you should be driving. Furthermore, affiliates don’t have to deal with internal regulations and beauracracy, so they can more or less get away with more tactics like publishing loads of content, paid linking, and taking full advantage of the social media outlets your management or PR division is not letting you tackle. Affiliates are the ninjas, mercenaries and dark armies of your industry, learn from them.

* Offline competitors sometimes don’t do the best SEO, maybe they just launch a flash site or brochure page and don’t rank at all, but they may have an advertising agency with a massive creative team building up their social media presence, hold contests or sweepstakes, build up Facebook followings, have a massive PPC budget and spend a lot of money on site advertising and sponsorships. By monitoring what the do in online advertising, you can identify keyterms and copy which work for them in their PPC campaign and also find out the sites or networks where they are serving graphic advertising, and contact those same networks about striking a deal which will assist with your SEO or linking. If your competition is serving ads there, then those sites hit your target market.

On-Site Competitive Intelligence
Now that you have identified the sites you need to monitor as part of your competitive intel strategy, now start looking into the on-site factors which help them rank in the search engines. You may find not only what they are doing right, but what you are doing wrong. When performing a competitive intel report, I suggest including your own site in the report and even having a third eye, like an SEO consultant or internal staff member, do the research on your own site.

* Site URL Structure : By tracking the URL structure and file naming structure of competitors, you can determine the best route to gain a competitive advantage over other companies.
* Site Development and Coding Structure : Which language is the site being coded in. Are there any conflicts in programming language or separate IP’s? This information is vital to SEO competitive intel.

* Use of Analytics : Is the competitor tracking user behavior and referrals via Google Analytics, Hitbot, Omniture? Looking into their analytics systems help give an idea of how much information they are capturing from their visitors and how advanced their internal tracking is – which may define how advanced their SEO team is.

* The directory files and URL structures of listings pages : This will be used to determine which techniques these competitors are using for their individual pages, their content, meta and URL structures, and how these reflect in the Google, Yahoo and MSN rankings.

* Page Title and META Title Review: Page titles are one of the most influential HTML elements used in an optimization campaign. Since the optimization of this variable is connected to rankings and actual links in the Search Engine Results Pages (or “SERPs”), an analysis has been conducted to provide which sites use a preferred title structure and which just use repetition of their company name.

* META Tag Review (Description / Keywords): META tags have limited relevance to rankings, but do play a part in that search results often feature the META Description tag. Knowing this, an optimized description that instigates action from the searcher is preferred. Further, integrating the targeted keywords allows for them to be bold or otherwise emphasized in the listings – which helps to convert more clicks in the SERPs through to the optimized site.

* Navigational System Review: Search engines spider, or seek out new content based on the links they find to resources on a page. Navigation systems are the most consistent manner for building internal link popularity, so research evaluates the overall strength of these systems used. For example, a Flash based navigational system is horrible for SEO, whereas consistent keyword driven links with keywords integrated are optimal.

* Broken Links : If a site has broken links, broken files or lists non-existant pages, then Google will lower the ranking of that site because the engine believes that the site is under construction. Run a link check using Xenu Link Sleuth to see if your competition is overlooking such linking and internal navigation issues.

* HTML Code Validity: Using the W3C Validation tools, your competitors’’ web sites have been reviewed. This allows the engines to promote sites that deliver a consistent and predictable user experience. Run each site through the validation tool, and reported back the number of errors noted.

* Design & SEO Integration: Similar to the internal navigational structure, the use of some HTML elements are preferred over others for SEO purposes. Our research and analysis of competing site designs have been provided in this document.

Why Ms is keen for a deal with yahoo

Microsoft is counting on Yahoo!'s search engine, which ranks as the second largest in the world with a global market share of 8%, to pose a more formidable challenge to Google, which holds 67% of the global audience, according to the most recent data from the research company, comScore. In the US, Google's share is 65%, compared with 20% for Yahoo!.

Despite spending billions to upgrade its search engine, Microsoft still held just a 3% share worldwide and 8% in the US in the comScore rankings.

There is a possibility that a deal combining the powers of the second and third-ranked search engine companies would be blocked by anti-trust regulators.

Shareholders of both Microsoft and Yahoo! have been urging the two to strike a deal for some time.

Earlier this month, the activist investor Carl Icahn, who owns about 5% of Yahoo! and is a director on its board, spoke out again in favour of a search deal, as talks between the two companies appeared to regain momentum. (TimesonLine) Microsoft is counting on Yahoo’s Search Engine, Which ranks as the second largest in the world with a global market share of 8%, to pose a more formidable challenge to google, which holds 67% of the global audience, according to the most recent data from the research company ComScore.

Highlights of the Deal
• Microsofts new Bing search engine will power yahoo’s searches, according to advertising age, while yahoo will handle the advertising sales, using Microsoft technology.

• The companies will use Microsoft’s advertising technology to deliver appropriate ads alongside search results.

• The deals should give Bing a giant boost in competing with Google.

• A deal combining the powers of the second and third search engine cos may be blocked by antitrust regulators.

Microsoft and Yahoo! yesterday unveiled a 10-year deal to create an online search and advertising partnership in an effort to challenge Google, the world's biggest internet search engine.

Under the agreement, Yahoo! will use Microsoft's new Bing search engine on its own sites, while Yahoo! will act as the exclusive global sales force for the companies' premium search advertisers.

Yahoo! will get to keep 88% of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell ads on some Microsoft sites. Yahoo! estimated the deal will boost its annual operating profit by $500m (€357m) and save it about $275m (€196m) on spending since it will not have to invest in its own search technology.

The deal has been announced more than a year after Yahoo! rejected a $47.5m (€34m) takeover bid from Microsoft and Yahoo!'s attempt to strike a search advertising deal with Google fell apart under regulatory scrutiny.

SEO for Bing is a No-Brainer Now

Google’s ubiquity in search is such that many clients feel that a website that is optimized for Google is good to go. Today’s announcement of a search deal between Yahoo and Microsoft ought to put a decisive fork in that thinking. Consider this – the combined share of the market that Microsoft’s Bing search engine will have is nearly 30%. Assuming this holds, businesses simply can’t afford not to optimize towards Bing’s algorithm when it will be powering results for both Bing and Yahoo.

So how different is Bing from Google when it comes to SEO?

The biggest difference is the weight given to what goes on offsite in the forms of links, something of a Google specialty that Bing gives much less weight to. On the other hand Bing does give much more weight to the domain name within a site’s URL to determine search rankings. There are a host of other differences that can add up to noticeable disparities in how a site is organically ranked on Google and Bing search results.

What will be interesting to see is how much of Bing’s most innovative aspect – how results are displayed and organized – comes to Yahoo. Right now, the layout and organization of results pages in Bing can give clues to what content needs to be created or altered on unoptimized websites. As an example, the related categories tool can give businesses the opportunity to optimize for several placements on the same results page.

Why the UK SEO industry doesn’t have an image problem

Lots of people think that the SEO industry has an image problem but here in the UK we don’t really see it that way. I meet with clients all the time who have had a bad experience with a particular SEO company in the past but they always blame the company, not the industry.

Nobody I’ve ever met in the UK has described what we do in a negative light while in the US everybody seems to paint SEO’s as scammers.

There are two types of people who make a lot of money in this industry, ones that are very good at SEO and work in a small team on their own projects and the others who have managed to take their SEO skills to the corporate level.

Just because you are great at SEO doesn’t mean you are great at the business side of things.
