Google Kills SEO Ranking Analysis Tools

Anyone in SEO worth their pay may have, this week, noticed that Google has been changing the code used to display their search results. Unfortunately these changes, and repeated tweaks to the SERPS code over the past few days, have had the knock on effect of wiping out a good portion of the web-based search ranking analysis tools, as well as some locally run ranking software.

SEOBook are one of the first to report that they have recently updated their online rank checking tools SEO for Firefox and Rank Checker and according to Aaron Wall of SEOBook.com "Both should work as of now, and if any more SERP changes happen we will try to update the extensions as soon as possible."

The changes however do beg the question. Are the SEO community, and their tools, responsible for so many requests on Google’s servers that they need to take action or are we looking at a simple backend HTML layout update?

The very act of querying Google with automated software is wrong, and according to Google’s webmaster guidelines…

"The sending of automated queries of any sort to our system without express permission in advance from Google. Sending automated queries absorbs resources and includes using any software (such as WebPosition Gold) to send automated queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage ranks in Google search results for various queries."

So, was it a simple backend update that caused a blip or a deliberate attempt to slow down the SEO community. Lets hear your thoughts?

How search engines index the site?

Justify FullSearch engine rankings are not formed purely by chance. Bing and Google have developed sophisticated algorithms to provide accurate and reliable service. The information fed back to them by "spiders" which are simple robots that crawl quickly on a website to search for the keyword relevance.

The combination of domains with the power and relevance of a page is therefore of critical importance, where it ends up in the rankings. However, there are many other things you need to do to grease the wheels of indexing, especially if you show a new site or wait weeks to have a policy change in Google.

The first way to improve your chances of being indexed by ensuring that the search engines where you are white. Webmaster Tools you can to a certain degree and is a great way to get the ball rolling - although certainly not guaranteed instant indexing.

You should also ensure that it is easy for the spider to find you. They are constantly crawling the Internet, so the more links you have pointing to your site, the more likely they are to follow one.

Inbound links, not only build your strength, but also help speed up the rankings. If this is the source of high traffic sites to be indexed by far more common every day, then your chances are to continue to grow.

There are, however, urge caution to all of them. You should make sure that if you put all the effort suggests that you do everything you can to help the spiders when they finally arrive at your site.

This means defining the meaning of each part, effectively ranking it will be crawled in the order you want. First on the list can be your site map. By controlling spider here, they can quickly find any page on the site and jump between them. Make sure you are not all the pages that you have a robots.txt file also indicated, which certainly can offer an explanation for the sluggish performance engine covers.

You should also ensure that even with clear links to the code is clean and the pages load faster. If the search engine spiders stable, they do not hang around to index the rest of your site. They are working not for a finite time frame and what they managed to fit in, not indexed. To keep the code and the site is relatively clean, very important.

Also make sure there are no dead ends. If you delete a page, remove all links to, or forward them to a live site. When spiders crawl into a disagreement, the matter should be reported to the search engines and also more likely to leave the spot. Provides you with a variety of potential problems.

So if you are indexed regularly and want to get top rankings, you need to play through the search engines. "It's not overly complicated, but if you do it right make sure you benefit from it.

5 Steps To A Great Web Landing Page

More often than not, businesses that pay to advertise or promote their products or services send everyone to the same place: the homepage of their company Web site. Unfortunately, when you send everyone to a homepage packed with multiple messages and calls to action, not to mention navigation that may distract from the purpose of your promotion, it's difficult to get your visitors to do exactly what you want them to do. Just as important, it's nearly impossible for you to effectively track ROAI, or return on advertising investment).

Successful marketers, especially ones accountable for ROAI, regularly use special landing pages to capture qualified leads and make sales. Web site landing pages are like the endcaps you see in a store -- the displays at the end of store aisles showcasing specific products and summoning customers to buy now. An effective landing page devoted to a single product or service offering, or one matching up with a message-specific referring advertisement, can significantly boost leads and conversion rates.

To create a top-notch landing page, follow these five simple steps:

Step 1: Anticipate customer expectations. Examine your ads to make sure your landing page is consistent with the messaging and expectations set in those ads.

Step 2: Focus on a clear, unambiguous call to action. Everything on a landing page should funnel the visitor's attention to a specific call to action. Make that action as easy as possible to execute.

Step 3: Incorporate SEO (search engine optimization). Carefully choose a page title and heading that include keywords people are likely to search to find your product or service. Use those same keywords -- no more than five to seven of them -- in the keyword meta tag for the page, and authentically incorporate those same words in the copy found on the landing page itself.

Step 4: Reduce clutter. Endcaps succeed by isolating one product from the static of the store aisle. Online, excessive information and choices such as unnecessary links, navigation options, or buttons --especially ones that lead elsewhere -- distract from your call to action.

Step 5: Convey safety and trust. A professional design and carefully edited text are a good start. Add logos or seals for acceptable payment methods, money-back guarantees, memberships in trade associations or the Better Business Bureau, and any media outlets that have reported positively on your company, products, or services.

One of the main advantages of creating a landing page devoted to one product or service is that you can monitor your site's traffic and conversions more easily and quickly gauge the ROAI of advertising campaigns. After launching your landing page, use Web analytics to identify and remove any obstacles to conversion. Minor tweaks can result in major gains.

At the end of the day, if your business is paying for traffic (either through display advertising in a magazine or pay-per-click or banner advertising online), you have every right to determine where on your Web site that traffic lands. Do your bottom line a favor: Create powerful yet succinct landing pages with strong calls to action that always relate to the driver that brings visitors to your page in the first place.

Google Writes On Mobile Site SEO Concerns & Techniques

The Google Webmaster Central blog has two excellent write ups on mobile SEO concerns and techniques. One is named Help Google index your mobile site and the other is named Running desktop and mobile versions of your site.

The reason for the two different articles is that often webmasters consider smart phone enabled sites as strictly mobile sites, but there are many mobile phones that have web browsers that don’t provide the rich experience that an iPhone or Android device do. If a webmaster wants to optimize their site for those devices and submit this type of content to Google, they can by learning how to create mobile friendly web pages for those devices and submitting a mobile sitemap.

At the same time, many webmasters prefer to not have a new URL for the same page based on accessing it on a desktop, iPhone or old-style mobile browser. Google’s second blog post explains how you can use the useragent to display a different stylesheet for showing the same content, in a different layout, for mobile devices and desktop devices. Google offered a diagram explaining how to do this without being considered cloaking:

To be honest, the best practices in this area are not 100% clear to me and I don’t think it is 100% clear to Google either. There are just too many ways to handle mobile devices, with so many different mobile browsers to use, plus handling printer friendly pages, desktop based pages, Internet Explorer versus Firefox or Safari and Chrome. Building out web sites that also comply with Google’s guidelines is complex, especially in the mobile front. These mobile blog posts from Google are useful but I, as do many, still have questions about handling this properly from a search spider perspective

Know the Importance of guest blogging in SEO

GuestBloggingEarlier we discuss why guest posts are good for SEO, what precisely is a guest post? A guest post is a post composed for a blog by individual who doesn't generally compose for that blog or website. The guest poster is often individual who runs their own website so has their own fans, or followers, who will visit the website to assure what they have to articulate, generating new traffic for the website and spreading up them to a new audience.

Guest posts are very popular on larger blogs that have a strong accompanying and are often seen when the main blog author is on holiday.

Why guest posts work for the blog owner.
· A guest post is free content provided by some else, usually very well written and informative
· A guest post is written by someone with their own following, which creates new visitors for your website
· A guest post generates links to your website from the poster’s website and from related websites that comment on the post
· Google News likes to see multiple authors on websites, so a frequent guest post provides this

The main benefit of guests posts works like a TV or comic crossover, such when Batman met Judge Dredd or when Transformers met Action Force. The two fandoms come together to see the crossover, making for a larger joint audience. With a guest post, you get the two website’s followers coming together to see how the collaboration works, generating more interest for both parties involved.

Website redesigns must take SEO into account

Although companies usually remake their corporate websites for reasons other than search engine optimization (SEO), the importance of integrating SEO into the new site when doing so cannot be overestimated.

Experts advise companies to start by doing keyword research on the most popular searches in their field, using both free tools like Google AdWords and internal information on which of the company's search ads have been successful.

However, there are still a few search engine optimization (SEO) pitfalls that await unwary companies, according to SEO expert Mark Jackson, writing at Search Engine Watch. Content that will remain common to both the old and new websites can trigger duplicate detection in search engines, causing their page rankings to plummet. Failing to update URLs from the old site with a redirect can lead to consumers receiving outdated and possibly incorrect content.

If done correctly, with proper attention paid to search engine optimization (SEO), website redesigns can produce great benefits for businesses. With so much information available on the internet about SEO firms and techniques, no company should pass up the opportunity to grow their online presence.

Bing continues to grow, making it more important for SEO

It appears that Microsoft continues to make a case for companies to factor Bing into their search engine optimization (SEO) strategy after the company saw its search engine market share in the U.S. increase in August.

According to comScore, Microsoft sites saw their share of searches increase 0.4 percentage points to 9.3 percent in August. Meanwhile, Google saw its share of the market dip slightly with a 0.1 point drop to 64.6 percent.

Overall, all the major search engines saw their searches increase last month, but Microsoft saw the largest gain with a 7 percent increase of 1.29 billion searches. This still leaves the search engine far behind Google's monthly search total of just under 9 billion.

Although comScore's numbers still have Microsoft in third place with less than 10 percent of the search engine market, these figures show that a Microhoo deal will likely make it important for companies to use search engine marketing for the new Bing/Yahoo partnership.

Together, Yahoo and Microsoft sites conducted more than 4.1 billion searches in August - giving them approximately 19 percent of the market.

Can Digg improve your site’s SEO?

Websites looking for increase traffic and SEO are instructed to get as many links as they can to their content. However, speculations are suggesting that linking to Digg, the popular social news site, may not help a site’s SEO.

Earlier this year, Digg unveiled the DiggBar, a toolbar and URL shortener that was said to be an SEO booster. However, last weekend, reports said that the URL-shortened links does not help website traffic. Instead, it redirects browsers to Digg.com.

digg-logo-heart-lg1“briefly, Digg has broken the trust relationship with its publishers and users,” said Pete Cashmore from Mashable. “They might not be hurting, however, since the use of Diggbar links significantly increased the amount of traffic to their site. Now that they’re driving a bunch more traffic from thousands of hijacked URLs, they’ll experience a veritable traffic bonanza at the expense of users and publishers.”

Digg’s founder Kevin Rose said he was not aware of the changes as he tweeted over the weekend. He had been on vacation for the past two weeks and would look over the issue today

Outsource SEO Services to India

India is fast-becoming the best place to outsource search engine optimization (SEO) services.

The country has a rich supply of new SEO companies and seo freelance seo experts — raising a competitive environment that guarantees a affordable price. Plus, modern studies indicate that the technical aptitude of SEO companies in India is very high, making them a cost-efficient investment.

India has always been titled a good place to outsource. The employees are quick learners and welcome to new directions. Results indicate that SEO services outsourced from this country can generate positive results.

However, SEO work takes a lot of manpower and manpower hours. Sites need to be sure that all the necessary SEO elements, specified link building, content creation, and constant updates. And this requires different departments and specializations.

E.g., content creation shouldn't be assigned to SEO specialists. While good content—in itself—cannot generate traffic, it's still a vital part of SEO. Content will back-up the formality of your site. And if you combine good content with a good SEO campaign—you've a good online business model.

SEO Site Analysis Facts and Fantasies

Website AnalysisWhile working with one particular kind of site analysis, a myriad of offerings are symbolic of the industry at large. There are small but thorough examinations of niche portions of a site -- social media, organic, SEM (define), PHP-only (define), and so on; large, comprehensive diagnostics of a site, including competitive analysis; and everything in between.

Similarly, the price range is enormous. But the quality of the analysis and the price don't correlate as tightly as you might like. That's why whether you're a shopper or a vendor, you must prove you can ask and answer intelligent questions.
Complete Medical History
It's possible to perform a pretty good site analysis without ever talking to the client (an unsolicited partial site analysis can be an efficient sales tool if handled and delivered correctly). But a truly exceptional analysis can be done only after a thorough interview with people who know the site's history.

It's a little frustrating when a doctor can't make a proper diagnosis until after running a battery of tests, doing a full blood workup, and taking a monotonous medical history. But it would be far more frustrating to go to a doctor, get an instant diagnosis, pop some pills, and then find out the diagnosis was wrong.

Here are some questions that I always ask potential site analysis clients, along with some rationale behind asking them:

* What is the SEO history of the site? What worked? What didn't? If you can get the client to discuss the SEO (define) history of the site, either knowledgably or honestly, you're already in good shape. Two potential problems: either your client contact hasn't been around long enough to know the history, or the client has and is embarrassed by it. But in a large site, getting an accurate background on specific techniques used is very helpful in understanding the state of the site.

* Who are the top three to five competitors in your space? This allows SEO and SEM vendors to discuss the difference between the industry competition versus the SERP (define) competition. For example, Nike's "industry" competition includes Adidas and New Balance, but its "SERP competition" includes Wikipedia, Zappos, and "Runner's World." When clients realize that a coherent strategy incorporates tactics designed to dethrone both types of competition, they're usually eager to get started.

* What do you want users to do once they arrive on your site? This question usually takes clients right to the moneymaker. Clients are very clear about what they want people to do on the site, and when they present those goals, it helps SEO/SEM firms plot a path directly to that destination and postpone extensive work on parts of the site that might be only tangentially related or completely unrelated to the goal path.

Same As It Ever Was?
If you're buying or selling a site audit, consider how it might have changed over the years. Shoppers, ask what elements the audit used to examine but no longer does. Vendors, don't give them time to ask, and instead, jump right into it.

Here you'll land squarely on the equator between the hemispheres of "best-practices SEO is timeless and unchanging" and "SEO is so dynamic that it's a constantly moving target." As you all know by now, it's both and neither.

Many years ago, for example, one of our diagnostics included taking a close look at the amount of internalized JavaScript (that is, actual JavaScript code lines) that a page contained. Back then, we bumped up against some pages that weren't entirely cached due to their immense file size, and externalizing the script files was a smart way to help reduce the file size.

Today, that's much less of a problem due to engines' abilities to index much larger pages. While we still evaluate that issue, it's now related more to page load time, and it's far lower on the priority scale than it used to be.

Now Try to Sell It
A paradox of SEO/SEM business development is the client who, on one hand, loathes the idea of "cookie-cutter" SEO, but on the other hand, wants to know (on the first call) exactly what you'll do with the site, how long it will take, and the expected results. This is the thorny path to the garden, and if you can diplomatically and deftly maneuver between the briars, you can educate the client about what you offer and why it might take longer than they expect.

BBC Pays Google For SEO & Internet Marketing

Despite Google’s claims that it does not sell better search engine ranking, it has been discovered that the BBC is paying the search giant to place its website at the top of listings for a series of keywords, as part of its internet marketing plan.

The BBC is using £100 million of its £3.5 billion yearly revenue, from TV license fees, to promote itself.

The Corporation said: ”Promoting content like the Mercury Prize online is an effective way to inform the licence fee payers who will want to watch it or read about it. The BBC has an annual budget for marketing and value for money is at the heart of how decisions are made about spending it.”

So how can smaller webmasters and bloggers, who don’t have the luxury of being able to network with Google bosses, compete for a high rank in Google?

As regular readers will be aware, I’m an SEO geek so here’s a few ideas, although non webmasters might lose interest around… now:

We all know the importance of using the correct keywords - but many who aim for broader / more general keywords often wonder why their site isn’t doing too well in Google. The trick here is to increase the number of target keywords, maybe move away from the near-impossible two word keyphrase and consider a ‘longtail’ keyword, containing a three or four word keyphrase.

Once your site or blog starts to become more established you can then begin to lose a keyword or two and move towards your original target. An effective method for small businesses is to include your location within the keyword phrase.

That is of course just one thing to consider in your overall SEO strategy, as I’ve said before, there’s at least 60 minor tweaks needed for top rankings, but it is quickly achievable - even if you have zero technical knowledge.

How Much Can an SEO Company Really Help You?

There is an excellent topic at a WebmasterWorld thread (required paid access). The topic is named, "Am I asking for too much from SEO companies?"

In short, the thread has one person who has several sites and has, over the years, had to hand over the SEO work to SEO companies. He has been through "all the 'SEO' firms in town" and is really never happy with the outcome. He asks, is he asking too much from these SEO companies? Is he expecting too much? Can an SEO company help him at this point?

We have discussed in the past the pros and cons of bring SEO in house. Clearly, an SEO who focuses for a long time in a specific industry may have some advantages. But at what point are your sites too big for an external SEO company?

The thread doesn't really go off on the size issue. The discussion there is more about what to expect from SEO companies and how to utilize them for a network of site in your situation. Some recommend that for his situation, he should just ask a few trusted SEO companies for SEO audits and then compare those audits. Maybe hiring an SEO on a month to month basis, doesn't pay for him - or maybe it does.

Like I said, lots of good questions and discussion around the top of the value of an SEO company in the thread.
